Fall 2014Posted by Jonathan Roth on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 11:20 pm

It’s been a little over a month since the start of the semester here at William & Mary and the Cycling Club has been busy with lots of activities! Here’s a glimpse at what we’ve done so far.

Activities Fair Tabling – August 26, 2014
Time to meet the new freshmen and transfer students! Thanks to Casey’s beautiful Bianchi propped up on the table, we attracted lots of interest from new students—over 50!

First Meeting of Semester / BBQ – August 31, 2014
A beautiful Williamsburg Sunday afternoon to grill some hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers and talk about bikes and the club with new members on Jamestown Field.

Sunrise Ride – September 5, 2014
No semester would be complete without a sunrise ride to College Creek! We left campus at a dark 6:00am, traveled down the Colonial Parkway and watched the sun rise over the James River at our favorite spot. Over 20 attended—new record?

Home Mountain Bike Race – September 13-14, 2014
This year, we welcomed collegiate racers hailing from Appalachian State University, George Mason University, North Carolina State University, UNC Charlotte, UVA, VCU, Virginia Tech and West Virginia University to York River State Park and Freedom Park for our annual Atlantic Collegiate Cycling Conference mountain bike race weekend. Saturday’s schedule had collegiate cyclists, as well as amateur riders from the community, racing the rooty and twisty Marl Ravine trail at York River State Park – familiar to roadies as our venue for our spring road race. Although a few showers passed through the area towards the end of the day, it was a great day of racing.
On Sunday, collegiate racers headed to Freedom Park to tackle their fast, flowy and narrow D&E cross country trails in the morning and sped around a fun section of C trail and a newly paved multiuse trail for an ultra-fast short track event.

I’d like to thank again our partners in the community and especially the members of the William & Mary Cycling Club for all their help in making this event happen! We had ten club members race and lots more come out to help with the registration table and serve along the race route as trail guides.

George Mason University Mountain Bike Race – September 20, 2014
Bryan, Dean, Matt, Jack and Jonathan took a trip up to Northern Virginia to race in GMU’s new mountain bike race at Wakefield Park in Fairfax! Following the Wednesdays at Wakefield course, they wound their way through 3.5 miles of forest and prairie per lap and finished with energy to spare for a side trip to the wonderful Fountainhead trails.

Virginia Tech Mountain Bike Race – October 4-5, 2014
One word to describe this weekend: COLD! Okay, maybe a few more: steep climbs, steep descents, flowy singletrack, great food, club alumnus, twelve hours of sleep, exhausted. Tech’s uphill time trial, short track, downhill, dual slalom and cross country events were tough but lots of fun. When the temps dipped into the forties, the campfire at the top of the ridgeline certainly helped everyone keep warm!

Basic Skills & Intro Ride – October 5, 2014
While some members of the club raced in Blacksburg, others rode to Jamestown to practice group riding skills. Sam, Becca, Linda, Ian and Harrison practiced road safety skills including signaling and pacelines, as well as bicycle maintenance and (actual) roadside flat tire repair.

Two New Team Bikes!
Due to the generosity of our donors and partners we’ve been fortunate enough to acquire TWO new bikes for club member use! Welcome our new mountain bike, a 2013 Raleigh Talus 29er Sport and welcome “The Seigler”, a carbon road bike built up with a hodgepodge of different components!

Both bikes are outfitted with a flat tire repair kit in a saddlebag. We’ve also purchased a new floor pump and a toolkit to make sure we keep these bikes in great shape.
